Introducing the Yonex Percept 100D! With this racquet, Yonex adds a new member to its most storied control franchise. In addition to being a tad more powerful and forgiving than the Percept 97's, the 100D packs a tight 18x19 string pattern, giving it a wonderfully precise and predictable trajectory on full cuts. It also packs a sub-320 swingweight, making it easier to whip up spin from the backcourt or react quickly at net. Notable features include an elongated shaft to enhance pocketing, flexibility and control, along with a stiffer racquet face for extra stability and power. To help with comfort, Yonex adds a Servo Filter, which utilizes a thin elastic layer in the shaft to filter out harsh vibrations. To further enhance feel, this racquet's graphite layup is enhanced by 2G-NAMD Flex Force, a material technology that enables the frame to flex optimally upon impact. Ultimately, with this addition to the Percept line, Yonex has delivered an impressive combination of speed, precision and feel to intermediate and advanced players.

GREAT RacquetPerfect control and power. I tuned the racquet with one gram of lead tape at 12 and three grams of silicon in the handle.

Enigmatic comes to mind..Of the Percept line, the 100D stood out as the most intriguing of the series for several reasons. Mainly it being the new kid on the block with a compelling 18x19 string pattern as well as its 305g unstrung weight. Looking at it on paper, the first question I had was “who is the target audience Yonex had in mind for this frame?” I think I may have an idea but after a couple playtest sessions, I still have more questions than answers. When first picking up the frame one can’t help but think “old school control”, given its straight beam width, dense string pattern, and moderately head light balance. It’s that AND SOME. As I’ve been using the ‘19 & ‘21 VCP 97H and more recently 97D, the first time hitting with the 100D was an eye opener. It’s FIRM! With a 66 RA stiffness rating, that is 2 points more than the previous VCP 100. Couple that with its 23mm beam width compared to the 97’s 21mm, it’s a different animal altogether. As compared to the 100 16x19, the launch angle is appreciably lower and though access to spin is there, I found I had to make a real conscious effort to do so initially so not as seamless as I would’ve hoped. That said, it has exceptional directional control both off the ground and on serves so more of a precision tool with a bit of a punch to it. Where this racket really shined for me was up at net! Volleys felt near effortless. Even in stock form, it felt plenty stable and I felt a sense of command over the ball I hadn’t experienced in a very long time! Even dipping shoelace volleys were not only made but had something behind the shot. Returns also felt precise when solid contact was made, almost similar to say a Speed Pro minus the bulk in weight. In the end, I came away a bit perplexed but also pleasantly surprised. If you’re looking for a spin friendly control racket, this isn’t it. I got the sense this would best suit s more seasoned player who plays more doubles than singles. The 305g weight does allow for customization so that may be in the works, next go around. But at its face, the Percept 100D is far more than what it seems. It’s certainly worth a try but again, be prepared to walk off the court scratching your head a little, but in a good way!
